A spectrum analyzer is a device that graphically displays the strength of radio signals as a function of frequency. On the screen, the operator sees 'peaks' representing active transmissions. Each known service occupies predictable bands, so the professional learns to recognize what is normal in that environment. When a peak appears out of pattern, at an odd time or with suspicious characteristics, the alert goes up. From there begins the investigative work of locating the physical source of that emission.

Why establishing a baseline is essential

Every location has its own electromagnetic 'signature'. Before flagging threats, the specialist records what is considered normal in that environment, creating a reference baseline. Without this step, it is easy to mistake an everyday signal for a bug. Comparing the expected with the observed is what allows anomalies to be isolated precisely. From detection to locating the device

Detecting a suspicious signal is only half the battle. Next, the professional must physically find the transmitter. To do so, they use directional antennas and strength measurements, moving closer to the source as the signal grows stronger. This process, called proximity localization, combines technology and method. Modern transmitters may use low power, burst transmission or encryption to hinder the hunt, which makes the operator's experience a decisive factor in the success of the sweep.
